Bitter Lemons is Lawrence Durrell’s memoir of his years living in Cyprus during the 1950s, as the island moved through political unrest and the campaign for union with Greece. The book blends travel writing, memoir, landscape, local character sketches and political observation.
By turns comic, lyrical and uneasy, it captures Durrell’s attempt to settle into Mediterranean village life while history closes in around him. The book won the Duff Cooper Prize for 1957.
