Condition: Second-hand. Fair to good vintage condition. Both volumes show age-related wear, rubbing and marks to the cloth spines and boards, with scattered staining and discolouration to the pale covers. Volume 2 has a small scuff to the spine. A dated gift inscription is written inside one volume. No slipcase is present. The bindings appear sound from the photographs supplied. Please see photos for the exact copy available.

A substantial two-volume history of nineteenth-century Spiritualism, tracing mediums, séances, psychical phenomena and the rise of organised Spiritualist belief. Podmore approaches the subject as both historian and sceptical investigator, drawing on reports, correspondence and records from the period.

Originally published in 1902 as Modern Spiritualism, this 1963 University Books edition was retitled Mediums of the 19th Century. It remains a useful reference for readers interested in Victorian Spiritualism, psychical research, mediumship, mesmerism and the history of the occult.

About the Author: Frank Podmore was an English writer, founding member of the Fabian Society and an important early investigator of Spiritualism and psychical research. He was closely associated with the Society for Psychical Research and became known for his critical, evidence-focused studies of mediumship and paranormal claims.
