John Gardner and Assyriologist John Maier present a literary translation of the ancient Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, following the Sin-leqi-unninni version of the text. The poem follows the king of Uruk, his friendship with Enkidu, encounters with monsters and gods, and Gilgamesh's increasingly desperate confrontation with grief, mortality and the possibility of immortality.

One of the foundational surviving works of world literature, Gilgamesh is especially significant for its ancient Mesopotamian mythology and its flood narrative, which predates the Biblical account by centuries. Gardner's contribution aimed to retain the poem's literary and lyrical force, while Maier supplied the scholarly framework around the text.
